Java 

Java is a programming language. Programs written in Java can be downloaded and run by your browser (They are known as 'Applets'). Java programs run by your browser can only read and write data from/to the server from which they are downloaded, THEY CAN NOT READ DATA FROM, OR WRITE DATA TO YOUR HARD DRIVE. Therefore it is always safe to run Java programs downloaded onto your computer.

JavaScript

JavaScript is a simplified form of Java. This programming language can be written into HTML web pages and is also 'run' by your browser. Like Java, JavaScript can not access data on your computer.
